Osteoporosis & Falls

Fall Prevention Awareness Month is a good time to learn how fall-related injuries and osteoporosis are related. Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become thin, weak, and more likely to break.

Although you can break a bone in any part of your body, the most common broken bones associated with osteoporosis are the hip, wrist and spine. The good news is it’s never too late to identify and treat osteoporosis or prevent falls to avoid broken bones. There are a few ways in which the two are related.

One out of five falls among older adults causes serious injury such as a broken bone; so prevention of falls is the key! Vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for both. Speak to your healthcare provider about how much Vitamin D and calcium is right for you, getting a bone density test, and about medications, if necessary, to treat osteoporosis.

Last but not least, is where physical therapy can help. Regular physical activity and exercises that combine muscle strengthening and balance help to reduce the risk of falls and actually improves your bone health. Physical therapists are experts in improving motion and mobility. Mobility is the key for physical independence. Consistent movement is key in maintaining a healthy balance system. A physical therapist can evaluate your risk for falling and devise the proper program to build balance, strength and flexibility. They will put together an appropriate exercise program based on the patient’s individual goals and needs. Get started on fall prevention today!
